An SUV driver struck a pedestrian in Huntington Station on Sunday night, seriously injuring him, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

The pedestrian, Edwin Segura, 39, of Huntington Station, was struck in the roadway by Christopher Simon, 25, of Bethpage, as he drove a 2017 Chevrolet southbound on New York Avenue at the intersection of West 4th Street at about 9:50 p.m., a police news release said.

Segura was brought to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow in serious condition following the crash. Simon, who stayed at the crash scene, wasn’t hurt.

The news release didn’t disclose the suspected cause of the crash, any finding of fault, the driver’s speed, the road conditions or other details of what happened. The police department’s investigation into the crash by the Second Squad remains unfinished, according to the release.

Late last month, Newsday found that Suffolk County led New York State in fatalities in automobile crashes — 113 killed, according to preliminary data for 2020 from the Albany-based Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research.

Drivers of vehicles accounted for 1,354 injured pedestrians on Long Island in 2019 — the most recent year for which full statistics are available, according to data maintained by the institute.

In Nassau, 876 were injured and 478 injured in Suffolk, the report shows. The institute says that 29 pedestrians were killed in Nassau and 31 in Suffolk.
