Pedestrian killed by car on Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge

A man pushing a shopping cart along Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge was killed when he was hit by a car early Saturday, Suffolk County police said.

Daniel Ingham was driving north on the highway about 1:05 a.m. when he hit a man who was pushing a shopping cart on the side of the road. Ingham, 24, of Halesite, stopped and called police.

The victim, whose name was not released pending notification of next of kin, had finished working at Walmart and was collecting cans, police said.

Paramedics transported the victim, who was flipped onto the car's hood and suffered massive head injuries, to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown where he was pronounced dead at 1:59 a.m.

Police said they don't expect to file charges.
