Pedestrian overpass closed since February reopens
A pedestrian overpass that had been closed since Feb. 27 at the busy Huntington Long Island Rail Road Station has now been reopened.
Town and Rail Road officials said it reopened Friday around noon.
“I and our commuters appreciate the LIRR’s attention to this interim fix and hope they will quickly design and begin work on the needed replacement in a manner that will have the least possible disruption,” Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone said.
Town officials closed the bridge after finding weather-related damage at the most easterly overpass that made it unsafe. Steps leading to the north platform were deteriorating and concerns about the overpass itself were raised, town officials said.
There was a delay in getting repairs started as the agency and town sorted out ownership. It was determined the LIRR is responsible for the overpass.
