A pedestrian was taken to the hospital with a broken leg and his dog died after each was hit by separate vehicles Tuesday evening in Sayville, Suffolk police said.

The man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital after being struck on Broadway Avenue, near Bethesda Lane, just before 5:30 p.m., police said.

His dog lay on the roadway, covered by a blanket, Fifth Precinct Det. Sgt. Al Feinstein said from the scene.

"It appears a vehicle hit the dog and took off, and the pedestrian tried to save the dog and was hit by another vehicle," Feinstein said.

Police said there were no other injuries, and no charges have been filed against the driver who hit the pedestrian.
