Pedestrian struck and killed by LIRR train in Mastic
A man walking along the Long Island Rail Road tracks in Mastic was struck and killed by an eastbound train early Monday, officials said.
The identity of the victim was not immediately released.
The incident occurred at about 1:20 a.m. about 2,000 feet east of the Mastic-Shirley station, railroad spokesman Sam Zambuto said. The train involved was the 11:41 p.m. train from Jamaica, scheduled to arrive in Speonk at 1:17 a.m.
There were no customers on board the train, Zambuto said.
The incident is under investigation by Metropolitan Transportation Authority police.
Two other trains were affected, one in each direction. The westbound 1 a.m. train from Montauk, scheduled to arrive in Babylon at 3:16 a.m., was disrupted - and passengers took a shuttle bus between Speonk and Babylon. Passengers aboard the eastbound 1:10 a.m. train from Jamaica, due to arrive in Montauk at 3:57 a.m., had to use bus service to all stations between Patchogue and Montauk, Zambuto said.
The incident remains under investigation by the MTA.
