Three Suffolk County police officers and a volunteer firefighter rescued two dogs from a burning house in North Bay Shore on Wednesday, police said.

Third Precinct Officers Christine Cunningham, Joseph Bianco and Bridgette Dormer responded to a house fire at on Spur Drive North at 6:24 p.m. but could not get inside because of thick smoke, police said.

But Cunningham was able to pull a small-breed dog from a broken window, and Brentwood firefighter Gabriel Castillo did enter the home and carried out a bullmastiff, which can weigh more than 110 pounds, police said.

The residents were not at home during the fire, police said.

Bianco and Dormer had smoke inhalation and Cunningham cut an arm reaching in past the broken window, police said. All went to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where they were treated and released.

The Arson Squad is investigating, but the fire appears to be noncriminal, police said.
