Police: 2 tried to steal cable

Two Suffolk men were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property after security agents on Plum Island called police Wednesday to say the pair were trespassing on county park land in Orient -- and stealing Verizon feeder cable from the location.

The park land is to the northeast of the Cross Sound ferry terminal and is the easternmost end of the North Fork. It is across Plum Gut from Plum Island, site of the highly secretive and secure government-run Plum Island Animal Disease Center and Plum Island Light.

Officers made the arrests after stopping the suspects as they tried to flee.

Arrested were Bert Roner, 35, of South Jamesport, and Nichaolas Latasso, 35, of Riverhead. Police said Roner also was found to be driving under the influence of a controlled substance, while Latasso was found to be in possession of heroin. Both men were held overnight for arraignment.
