A 57-year-old man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries after a two-vehicle accident that closed New Highway in North Amityville for hours on Thursday, police said.

Suffolk County police said William Brelsford was making a left turn from Cassata Drive onto northbound New Highway when his 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe was struck by a southbound 2007 GMC Acadia driven by Deborah Jones, 38, of Copiague.

The crash was reported in a 911 call at 5:47 a.m.

Jones and her 5-year-old daughter, who also was in the vehicle, were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment of minor injuries.

Police said the crash closed New Highway in both directions between 46th Street and New Horizons Boulevard.

The road has reopened.

The vehicles were impounded for safety checks, police said, and the investigation is continuing. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
