Eleven people were arrested during the holiday weekend at a sobriety checkpoint in Lindenhurst, Suffolk County police said.

Police stopped 863 vehicles on Route 27 in front of Babylon Town Hall beginning at 11:30 p.m. Saturday through 2:40 a.m. Sunday.

During that time, 11 people were arrested -- 10 charged with driving while intoxicated, and one charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs.

Police said the checkpoint was intended to prevent injuries and fatalities associated with drunken driving.
