A bicyclist was killed Friday afternoon after he collided with a vehicle in North Bay Shore, Suffolk police said.

Jose Benitez, 63, was on his bike going south on Fifth Avenue when he tried to turn onto another lane and was hit by a Hyundai shortly after 3:15 p.m., police said.

Benitez, of Brentwood, was taken to Southside Hospital, where he died from his injuries, police said.

The accident happened by Jensen Road, and Fifth Avenue was shut in both directions between Marvin and Kirk roads until about 6:45 p.m. as officers investigated, police said.

The Hyundai driver, Danny Hernandez, 22, of Bay Shore, was not injured, police said, but his vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Third Precinct detectives are investigating and ask anyone with information to call 631-854-8352.
