A BMW crashed into a Shirley house early Wednesday evening, Suffolk County Police said.

The accident happened at about 5 p.m.

The vehicle, which hit a house on Hay Road, had earlier been pursued by police, who said in a statement that the pursuit was halted before the crash.

After the vehicle slammed into the home, the driver fled on foot, police said.

Aviation and canine officers searched the area but did not find the driver.

Police did not immediately release additional information, including about whether the home was occupied when it was hit.

"There is an ongoing investigation to find him," a police spokeswoman said.
