A man whose body was found Tuesday in woods along West Main Street in Riverhead was an apparent victim of suicide, police said.

A pedestrian reported finding the body and police responded at 11:13 a.m., Riverhead Town police said.

"A subsequent investigation revealed that the death did not appear to be suspicious in nature," police said in a statement. "The name of the deceased is being withheld at this time until notification is made to family members."

The body was taken to the county medical examiner's office for examination.

West Main Street was blocked off in the early afternoon as investigators worked in a patch of trees between the Riverhead Free Library and Sweezy Avenue. West Main was reopened around 1:30 p.m.
