Police are trying to figure out how a young boy, believed to be about 3 years old, was out wandering on a busy street in Smithtown early Thursday.

A passing motorist spotted the child near the intersection of Town Line Road and Terry Road and called 911 at 1:37 a.m., Suffolk County police said.

Police said they do not know the name of the boy, do not know his exact age. A police spokesman said it was not clear if the boy wandered away from a nearby home — or if he had been abandoned in the area.

The boy is currently at the Fourth Precinct and police said the investigation is ongoing.
