Suffolk police issued 13 tickets during a Saturday bus safety checkpoint in Melville.

In addition to the tickets, police placed two drivers out of service for safety violations and took four vehicles out of service for mechanical defects.

The 13 tickets were issued for various violations of state transportation law, police said.

Police inspected eighteen buses and limousines during the checkpoint, which was located at a park-and-ride lot near Exit 49 of the Long Island Expressway. Police said the checkpoint was "part of an ongoing statewide initiative."

A similar check on April 23 resulted in 11 drivers and vehicles ticketed and taken out of service in Melville. A total of 20 vehicles were issued during that check, according to police.
