Police: Child rescued from Hampton Bays pool
Police and volunteer emergency medical responders saved a child found unresponsive in a Hampton Bays swimming pool Sunday evening, continuing resuscitation efforts until hospital staff could restart the victim's heart.
The rescue occurred at a home in the Rampasture Point section of Hampton Bays, Southampton Town police said. Police did not release the identity of the child -- or the family, citing "the sensitive nature" of the rescue.
The age and sex of the child also were not released.
Police said responding officers from Southampton police and State Police assigned to the Riverside Barracks found the child "unresponsive in a pool" and began resuscitation efforts. Members of the Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps then continued those efforts as they transported the victim to Southampton Hospital, where ambulance personnel and hospital emergency room staff "were able to restart the child's heart," according to police.
Once stabilized, the child was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. The child's condition was not known Tuesday.
Police said the Detective Division is investigating the circumstances of the incident.
