Suffolk police said they responded to what they initially believed may have been a hostage situation or a robbery inside a North Amityville diner late Tuesday night.

Emergency services police and First Precinct officers converged on Michelle's 110 Diner at 756 Broadway after someone called police at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

"It's a dangerous situation," First Precinct Sgt. Karen Kolsch said shortly after midnight.

At about the same time, a police officer at the scene said it was a robbery investigation.

Just after 1 a.m. Wednesday, emergency services police said they cleared the building and had no one in custody. Kolsch said that the suspects fled when the first patrol car arrived.Earlier, police cordoned off the area at Ritter Avenue, the cross street near the diner. There were two trucks from the emergency services unit. Officers could be seen interviewing five people.

No other details were available.

According to its website, Michelle's diner is open 7 days a week from 6 a.m. to midnight. No one answered the phone about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday.
