A Suffolk County police officer fired five shots, twice striking a man who police said had pulled a pistol on patrol officers during a traffic stop in Wyandanch late Monday.

The officers were unharmed. The suspect, identified by police as Jalane Latif, 18, of North 19th Street in Wyandanch, was shot twice in the arm and is hospitalized with what police called “non-life-threatening” injuries. His condition was not immediately available.

Police said the shooting took place during a traffic stop by First Precinct patrol officers in a marked unit on North 20th Street near the intersection with Nicolls Road at 11 p.m.

Nearing the vehicle officers said they smelled marijuana — and asked the driver and passenger to exit the vehicle.
Police said that as they did Latif, who was in the passenger seat, “pushed one of the officers” and then “raised a handgun towards the officers.”

One officer, whose identity was not released, then fired five times, police said — striking Latif twice in the arm.
A .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol was recovered at the scene, according to police.

Latif was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, while the driver, whose identity also was not released, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. Police said Latif will be arraigned at a future date.
