Police dog sniffs out burglary suspect
The Suffolk County Police Canine Section, with the assistance of its German Shepherd, Ozzy, helped Northport Village police catch a burglary suspect Sunday in East Northport, police said.
Around 2 a.m., Northport Village Police Sgt. Michael Cook discovered that Village Physical Therapy, 433 Fort Salonga Rd., was being burglarized, police said in a Monday news release.
Cook requested assistance from the Suffolk County canine unit, and canine Officer Charles Tramontana and Ozzy searched the interior of the building. They found a suspect, Jose Nunez-Garcia, 16, of 113 Dickson Ave., East Northport, hiding in the building, police said.
"After further investigation by [Suffolk] Second Squad Det. Nicholas Favata, Nunez-Garcia was charged with four additional burglaries that occurred at businesses in Northport and East Northport," according to a news release.
One burglary included a Bank of America branch on Larkfield Road in East Northport, police said.
Nunez-Garcia, charged with five counts of burglary, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Central Islip.
