Police: Driver ditches car in Port Jefferson creek, flees

A driver escaped serious injuries when he crashed his car into a small creek behind Port Jefferson Village Hall late Wednesday, police said.

But the Smithtown man, whose identity was not released, was later charged by Suffolk County police with leaving the scene of an accident.

Police said the accident at 121 W. Broadway was reported at 11:30 p.m. and said officers arrived to find a 2002 Honda Accord unoccupied, on its side, in the Old Mill Creek.

The water level was just a few inches deep at the time, officials said. The car was later removed by a tow truck.
