A Middle Island man was arrested on drunken driving and drug possession charges after officers found him asleep at the wheel of a stopped car that was in gear, engine running, on a road Saturday night in Mattituck, police said.

Leroy Jones III, 22, was charged with driving while intoxicated and with criminal possession of a controlled substance after his arrest on Sound Avenue at 8:14 p.m., Southold Town police said.

Arraignment details were not immediately available.

Police said Jones "was found sleeping at the wheel with the car still in gear" -- and that upon being interviewed by officers, he was found to be intoxicated. During his arrest police said officers also recovered heroin and crack cocaine.

The bag was "in plain view in the vehicle," police said.
