Police: Drunken driver had child in car

An East Northport man violated Leandra's Law, driving drunk on New Year's Eve in Islip with an 11-year-old passenger, State Police said.
Jose Bonilla, 38, faces a felony charge of driving while intoxicated after troopers pulled him over at about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Crooked Hill Road and Expressway Drive North, police said.
Bonilla's Ford Explorer was stopped at a light, and when it turned green he failed to proceed through the intersection, according to a news release.
An investigation determined that Bonilla was intoxicated, the release said, and the Explorer was "occupied by several members of Mr. Bonilla's family, including an 11-year-old child."
Police did not reveal the relationship between Bonilla and the child. A call to police for more information was not immediately returned.
Bonilla's arraignment information was not immediately available.
Under Leandra's Law, driving drunk with a passenger age 15 or younger is a felony. The law was passed in 2009 after Leandra Rosado, 11, was killed in a DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed in Manhattan.
