Normally, the police Crime Scene Unit van goes to investigate a crime scene.
On Tuesday night, Suffolk County police said, the crime scene came to the van when a suspected drunken driver crashed into a marked Crime Scene Unit vehicle in West Babylon.
Police said James D. Toner, 54, of 205 Sandpiper Lane in West Babylon, crashed his 2008 Mercedes-Benz into the police van at Montauk Highway and Bergen Avenue at 10:11 p.m.
An investigation determined Toner was drunk and he was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.
He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip.
Police did not identify the officer driving the van. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was treated for neck and back injuries and released.
