Police are searching for a gunman who robbed a Bay Shore pharmacy and got away with cash.
No one was injured in the robbery of the Health Mart Pharmacy on Candlewood Road at about 9 p.m. Tuesday. There were people in the store but police could not say if any were customers.
It was not clear if pharmaceuticals or prescription medications were also taken. Police said details of the incident were still emerging.
There have been two deadly robberies on Long Island in the past year, one Dec. 31, 2011, in Seaford, where an off-duty federal agent and a suspect were killed, and another June 19, 2011, in Medford, where Long Island's deadliest mass shooting in 18 years occurred after a robbery for prescription drugs left four dead.
Statewide, robberies of pharmacies for controlled substances rose to 30 in 2010 from four in 2006, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Newsday last year reported on nine pharmacy robberies and one attempted pharmacy robbery in Nassau and Suffolk.
