A 25-year-old man, sitting with three friends on the front stoop of a house, was shot and killed late Tuesday night in Huntington Station, police said. The three other men were also shot, one man shot in the abdomen — the other two suffering only what police called “non-life-threatening” injuries.

The shooting occurred on Railroad Street near Kilburn Avenue at 10:55 p.m., Suffolk County police said. The site is about a half-dozen blocks from the Jack Abrams Intermediate School, which, along with the surrounding neighborhood, has been plagued by notable acts of violence in recent months.

That led to the contentious decision to close the school before the 2010-11 school year.

Police identified the Tuesday night shooting victim as Russell Peterman. Police could not immediately provide an address for Peterman and could not confirm reports he had been shot in the head.

Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other victims were transported to local hospitals.

Police said Peterman and the others were talking on the stoop of a home with “an unknown man” walked up and simply began shooting.
It was not clear how many shots were fired — or if anyone among the victims knew the shooter. Police said the shooter has not been apprehended and said the investigation is continuing Wednesday.

Anyone with information is being asked to call the Homicide Squad at 631-852-6392 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. Police said all calls will remain confidential.
