Police investigate taxi driver robbery

A taxi driver who had just dropped off a fare was robbed at gunpoint by a man who entered his cab and forced him to drive for more than five minutes before fleeing, police said.

The armed robbery took place just before 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Farmingdale, Nassau County police said. The cabdriver was not injured.

Police said the cabbie, identified only as a 38-year-old man, dropped off a fare on Main Street and Grant Avenue, when the assailant, believed to be about 5 feet, 6 inches tall and wearing baggy pants, jumped into the taxi -- and flashed a silver and black handgun. The robber then ordered the cabbie to drive, forcing him to drive around between 5 and 10 minutes, before stealing cash, police said.

The assailant then exited the taxi near the intersection of North Maple Street and Simonson Place, fleeing on foot.
