A reported late-night barricade situation in Amityville on Sunday ended with police storming a home on Maple Place -- and finding no one inside.

No one was injured in the incident, which Suffolk County police said began with a man firing shots into a car belonging to his girlfriend. Police are still searching for the man, who had reportedly then barricaded himself in the home, but who apparently fled the scene instead.

The incident was reported as a shots-fired call just after 9 p.m., police said. Amityville police officers responded and were later joined by Emergency Services Unit officers from Suffolk. Police said the incident began as an argument between the man and woman and escalated when the man then fired bullets into her car. The woman was not injured.

The woman told officers she believed the man had fled into the home -- and barricaded himself inside.

When ESU officers finally entered the home about three hours after the incident began they found it unoccupied, police said.
