Police: Man, 19, shot in West Babylon

A West Babylon man has been charged in the shooting of another man in front of the suspect's home on Wednesday, Suffolk police said.

Police said an ongoing dispute between two groups led to a gathering in front of 4 Lamberta Court, where Devon Smith-Martin, 19, lives. Several people got into a physical altercation, which ended with a 19-year-old man being shot in the leg. The victim was taken to the hospital by a friend and was treated for an injury that is not considered life-threatening, police said.

Officers responded to the scene of the fight after a 911 caller reported shots had been fired, but Smith-Martin and the victim had already left, police said. First Squad detectives investigated and arrested Smith-Martin a short time later. He was charged with second-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment, police said.

Smith-Martin was held overnight at the First Precinct and was arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday. Court records detailing his arraignment information were not immediately available Thursday night.
