A Brentwood man and woman were arrested Monday night and charged with endangering the welfare of a child after what police said was a drunken-driving incident on the Southern State Parkway.

Edwin Santiago, 54, was arrested and charged with felony driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI and endangering the welfare of a child after the traffic stop near Bay Shore Road at 9:30 p.m., State Police said. Police said Santiago was driving a white Honda Accord and that Blanca Lopez, 25, of Brentwood and her three sons -- ages 1, 4 and 5 -- were passengers in the car.

No one was injured, police said. However, they said Santiago was observed "swerving" and "driving onto the right shoulder."

Police said Santiago had "slurred speech, poor motor coordination and bloodshot watery eyes" when stopped.

Lopez was charged with three counts of child endangerment, police said.

Santiago faces a felony DWI charge because he has been convicted of at least one felony DWI within the past 10 years, police said. The aggravated DWI charge is under Leandra's Law, which makes it a felony to drive drunk with a child under age 16 in the vehicle.

Police said the children were released to the custody of their father. Arraignment details were not immediately available.
