Police responding to a 911 call reporting a stabbing outside a store in Copiague late Wednesday night determined the victim, identified only as a man, had been shot in the leg.

The incident occurred outside a convenience store on Great Neck Road near Dante Avenue at about 11:30 p.m., Suffolk County police said.

Police said the initial report was that the victim had been stabbed in the leg, but said responding officers determined the man had been shot.

The victim was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said officers are still searching for a suspect.
