Police: Man stole parkway fencing for rent
A North Babylon man stole aluminum fence rails from along the Southern State Parkway to raise rent money, State Police said Wednesday.
Steven Donisi, 32, was spotted by troopers carrying something on his shoulder Tuesday as he walked on the eastbound side of the Southern State Parkway near Exit 36, Straight Path, in West Babylon at about 8:25 a.m., police said.
Donisi told troopers the aluminum rails used for hanging chain-link fencing were scraps he found in the woods.
However, troopers discovered the rails -- long poles that attach vertically to fence posts -- had been taken from fencing separating the parkway from private residences, according to a news release.
Donisi also was carrying tools, including snips, which could be used to disassemble the fencing from the rails, police said.
Donisi told troopers he was going to sell the aluminum for scrap to pay his rent.
Donisi is charged with grand larceny and criminal mischief -- each a Class E felony -- and criminal trespassing, police said. His arraignment information at Suffolk County's First District Court in Central Islip was not immediately available.
