Police: Pair tailed truck, stole packages

Two men were arrested Tuesday, accused of stealing packages from residential doorsteps, after police said they followed a UPS truck around Bay Shore -- and stole goods the driver left outside homes en route.

Albert Munoz, 21, of 1457 Peters Blvd., Bay Shore, and Freddy Benavides Jr., 20, of 110 McNair St., Brentwood, were arrested by Suffolk County police after an off-duty New York State trooper spotted the two stealing a package from outside a home in Bay Shore -- and called 911 to report it. Police said Third Precinct Patrol Officer Arthur Martrano arrested the two men when the suspects followed the UPS truck into the parking lot of the U.S. Post Office on Fifth Avenue in Bay Shore at 3:15 p.m.

Police said an Apple EarPod, an iPad Mini case and two pairs of Skechers sneakers were recovered during the two men's arrests.

Both men face charges of two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and Munoz also faces a charge of one count of unlawful possession of marijuana. Munoz is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Central Islip. Benavides was given a desk appearance ticket and will be arraigned at a later date.
