Police: Pedestrian hit, seriously injured by van in Sayville

Suffolk County police are investigating a motor-vehicle accident that seriously injured a pedestrian in Sayville on Tuesday.

Fifth Squad detectives said that James Dower of Sayville was walking north on Lincoln Avenue at about 7:40 p.m. when he was hit by a Ford van traveling south and attempting a turn east onto Hiddink Street.

Dower, 58, was airlifted by a police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital where he is being treated for a serious head injury.

The van's driver, James Gross, 47, also of Sayville, remained at the scene. His vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
