Minutes after a traffic stop in North Babylon, police said the driver of a Porsche flipped the car onto a retaining wall of a monument on Main Street near Islip Town Hall early Tuesday, then fled the scene on foot.

The crash occurred at 2 a.m., Suffolk County police said. The Porsche was impounded.

Police said the driver, whose identity was not released, was stopped minutes earlier near the intersection of Weeks Road and Bay Shore Road in North Babylon. Police could not immediately say why the car had been stopped -- or if the driver had been issued summonses.

Police said a short time later officers responding to an accident scene in Islip found the Porsche overturned and driver missing. It was not clear if anyone was hurt in the crash.
