Suffolk County police are investigating a possible street fight Tuesday in Mastic Beach that injured a William Floyd High School student off school grounds, according to police and a school spokeswoman.

A school spokeswoman said the male student was injured late Tuesday morning when he was off school grounds. The student then returned to the nurse's office at the school for treatment of the injury.

Spokeswoman Heather Battaglia said she did not know what type of injury the student had sustained or why the student was off school grounds.

A police spokeswoman said officers were investigating what appears to be a street fight near the school, at Madison Street and Mastic Road, but did not have more information.

She said the injured person was taken to a nearby hospital for the injury.
