Police rescue disabled man from E. Islip house fire
Two police officers braved a house fire to make a rooftop rescue Friday of a disabled East Islip man who had climbed out a window to escape the flames, Suffolk police said.
It was shortly before 4 p.m. when Officers Jonathan Allen and Kelly Hendrickson of the Third Precinct responded to the East Adams Street home.
They saw James Hanovic, 67, on the rooftop and, using a nearby ladder, they climbed up to the roof, carried Hanovic away from the home and gave him oxygen until rescue workers arrived, police said.
No one else was in the home during the fire.
Hanovic was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of heart and respiratory problems, police said.
Islip Terrace Fire Department, East Islip Fire Department, Islip Fire Department and Central Islip Fire Department responded.
Suffolk County Police Arson Squad detectives are investigating the cause of the fire.
