Police rescue man from Medford storm drain

Police officers rescued a man who fell into a Medford storm drain Monday while trying to retrieve a cellphone.

The 25-year-old man accidentally dropped the phone down the drain on Route 112, near Granny Road, at about 6:40 p.m., Suffolk County police said in a news release.

"The man attempted to retrieve the phone but slipped and fell into the drain's holding tank where he became trapped," police said in the release. "He was able to call 911 with a second cellular phone that he had with him."

Emergency Service Section Officers Paul Carpenito and William Judge used a reciprocating saw and a ladder to free the victim, who was not injured, police said.
