Police save Port Jefferson man from heroin overdose

A Suffolk County police officer revived a man who overdosed on heroin at a Port Jefferson home on Saturday morning, law enforcement officials said.

Sixth Precinct Officer James Parkinson responded to a 911 call at 10:40 a.m. about a 21-year-old man on Midland Avenue who was overdosing on heroin, police said.

Parkinson administered oxygen and a dose of intranasal Narcan to the man, who later regained consciousness and was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson.

The Suffolk County Police Department is participating in a State Department of Health pilot program involving intranasal Narcan, a prescription drug used to reverse opiate overdoses.

The program is also used by the Suffolk Marine Bureau and the Emergency Service Section.
