Police save teen from heroin overdose

A 17-year-old Baywood male, who police said had overdosed on heroin, was saved by four Suffolk County police officers who responded to an emergency call Tuesday, police said.

The teen, whose identity was not released, was revived after being administered a dose of intranasal Narcan. He was then taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore by Brentwood Legion Ambulance. His condition was not immediately known Tuesday.

Police said the four Third Precinct officers -- Richard Meyer, John Pizzuto, Frank Ortiz and Christopher Germano -- responded to the call of an unconscious man bleeding from the nose at 1:16 a.m.

The four found the teen and administered the Narcan, a prescription drug used to reverse opiate overdoses. Suffolk police are participating in a New York State Department of Health pilot program involving the deployment of the intranasal rescue drug to law enforcement agents and other emergency responders in an effort to combat overdoses.

The program is being used by officers in all Suffolk police precincts, as well as Marine Bureau and the Emergency Service Section.
