New York State Police safely talked down a woman who was planning to jump from a Southern State Parkway overpass on Friday morning.

Police said they received a report at 10:35 a.m. of a woman preparing to jump at Bay Shore Road, near exit 41N on the Southern State Parkway.

Senior Investigator Simon Ocampo, who is also a crisis negotiator, and Investigator Charles Knapp were stationed at state police offices in Brentwood when both heard the report and headed to the scene.

Ocampo and Knapp found a despondent woman getting ready to jump off the overpass, police said.

With the help of Suffolk County police, state police cut away the protective fence between the overpass and the traffic below. The officers then were able to negotiate with the woman to climb back to Bay Shore Road.

State police said the woman was taken to Southside Hospital for evaluation.
