Suffolk County police on Thursday asked for the public's help identifying and finding the driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision on Sunrise Highway in West Babylon last month.

The police also released a photo of the victim, Jennifer Wheeler, 30, of North Lindenhurst.

Detectives believe she was struck by a vehicle at around 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 7.

That morning, a motorist told police he saw a woman leaning against the center median, and turned around to check on her. By then, others had stopped where Wheeler was lying, dead, in a westbound lane about 500 feet west of Jerome Avenue.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to make a confidential call to Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
