Police seek hit-run driver in Freeport crash
Police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who struck a pedestrian crossing a Freeport street on Saturday morning.
The victim, 54, was crossing Main Street from east to west at about 8:10 a.m. near the railroad tracks when the car hit him, then drove off toward Sunrise Highway, a police department spokeswoman said.
The victim was brought to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was hospitalized for head trauma, the spokeswoman said. He remained in stable condition early Saturday evening.
Detectives at the Baldwin-based First Squad said the fugitive vehicle likely sustained front-end damage and may have a shattered windshield. Witnesses told police the car was tan, possibly a Toyota Camry or a Nissan, with white New York license plates and was driven by a man who headed west on Sunrise after the crash.
Anyone with information can call the department's anonymous hotline: 800-244-TIPS.
