Police are searching for a snowplow operator they said was involved in a December hit-and-run in Sayville that left an elderly couple injured.

The crash occurred Dec. 20 at about 1:30 a.m. as the couple was driving north on Railroad Avenue. As the couple drove through the intersection at Montauk Highway, Suffolk County police said the westbound plow struck their 2003 white Grand Vitara and pushed it into a snowbank.

Police said the plow driver got out of the truck - a white pickup with a red plow - and walked over to the sport utility vehicle, then fled.

The elderly woman, who was in the front passenger seat, suffered a broken nose. The elderly man, who was driving, suffered a broken finger.

Police are asking that anyone with information regarding the crash contact Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
