Suffolk detectives investigating the death of a pedestrian on the Long Island Expressway are trying to locate witnesses who saw the victim just before he was struck by a box truck Sunday in Melville.

The man, whose name was withheld pending official identification by the medical examiner's office, was on the shoulder of the eastbound expressway as the truck approached in the right lane about 2 p.m. just east of Exit 49, Route 110, police said.

The driver, Humberto Maldonado, 49, of Brentwood, told police that the man "stepped in front" of his truck, said Second Precinct Det. Sgt. Steven Bluethgen.

Police said no criminality is suspected, but Bluethgen said detectives want to find other witnesses, perhaps a westbound motorist who happened to "glance over" and saw the accident.

The pedestrian, 61, is from out of state and authorities have started tracking down his family, Bluethgen said. Detectives are trying to determine how he got onto the LIE, including whether he left a vehicle nearby.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County medical examiner's office, police said.

Maldonado was not injured, but his truck was impounded for a safety check, police said. Police vehicles and orange cones on Sunday had blocked access to the expressway, which reopened about 6 p.m.

Police ask witnesses to call Second Precinct detectives at 631-854-8252.
