A Suffolk police officer accidentally shot himself in the leg Tuesday and was hospitalized, according to officials.

The shooting occurred at 12:47 p.m. Tuesday inside a department vehicle in the parking lot of Locust Avenue Deli & Caterers, at Church Street and Locust Avenue in Bohemia, according to a police spokeswoman.

The officer is assigned to the department's Emergency Services Unit and was on duty at the time of the shooting, police said. He was taken a short distance by a department vehicle to Long Island MacArthur Airport, where the unit is headquartered. A helicopter took the wounded officer from there to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment. He remained hospitalized late Tuesday and was listed in stable condition.

The Homicide Squad is investigating. A police spokesman Tuesday declined to identify the officer or provide further details on the shooting or the officer's condition.
