Police: Suffolk cop shot own foot during training
A Suffolk police officer Friday accidentally shot himself in the foot at the county's Westhampton shooting range, police said.
A Westhampton ambulance service took the officer to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment. A police spokesman described the wound as superficial, and said the officer was expected to be treated and released. The spokesman said the weapon involved was the officer's Glock 19, a 9-mm semiautomatic. He declined to identify the officer or comment on the circumstances of the shooting.
All officers are required to complete a gun certification renewal every year. Exercises include shooting targets from behind barriers, in the open, and firing from one knee.
