Police: Three people shot in N. Amityville

Three people were wounded Friday morning in two shootings in North Amityville that occurred within minutes of one another and less than a mile apart, Suffolk police said.

Detectives are investigating potential gang involvement, said Det. Lt. Robert Edwards, who added that it was "absolutely possible" for the same person or people to have committed both shootings.

Friday's incidents and two others in the same neighborhood in the past eight days have left a total of six men seriously wounded and a 44-year-old man dead. There have been no arrests in any of these attacks.

The first 911 call at 9:21 a.m. Friday brought First Precinct officers to a home on South Prospect Street, where they found Rasheed Williams, 25, of North Amityville, lying in a driveway and bleeding profusely from a leg wound.

With an ambulance en route, a second 911 call eight minutes later brought a second set of patrol cars and medical personnel to a Coolidge Avenue residence near Route 110, about seven blocks west of the first shooting.

Officers there found Jonathan Ambrose, 22, of North Amityville inside a car parked in the driveway. He'd been shot in the back, Edwards said. Several shell casings were recovered from around the car; two bullet holes were visible in the sedan's driver side door and a side window was blown out.

As more personnel responded to the scenes, an officer pulled over a man driving erratically near Pendale Drive and Warren Street, several blocks north of the shootings. Keith Carlisle, 25, of Amityville, a passenger in car, was bleeding from a face wound.

Edwards said Carlisle had been in the sedan with Ambrose when he was shot; he later told police he drove to a friend's house for a ride to the hospital. All three men were hospitalized Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. All three were expected to recover, police said.

After crime scene investigators filled evidence bags and shot photos outside the South Prospect home, one of Williams' relatives used a large glass bottle to pour water over pools of blood in the dirt driveway.

The relative, who asked not to be identified, said he stepped outside to smoke a cigarette Friday morning and saw Williams arguing in the driveway with another man. "They had some words and the next thing I know the guy pulls a gun and, pow, he shoots him, and I head that way fast," he said, gesturing to the back of the house. "I don't want to catch a bullet."

The relative said the man got in a car and drove away.

Police said they are looking for a possible connection between the shootings and two others in North Amityville in recent days.

On Jan. 13, a verbal dispute in the parking lot of an apartment complex off Harrison Avenue led to a shooting that killed James Terry, 44, of North Amityville and seriously wounded two others.

Five days later, Arthur Armstrong, 30, of Brentwood, was shot in the abdomen by an unknown assailant in the courtyard of the Cloverdale Garden Apartments on Great Neck Road. With Zachary Dowdy
