First Squad detectives in Suffolk County are investigating a car crash that killed a woman and engulfed her car and a West Babylon gas station in flames Friday night.
Just one minute before midnight, a woman in a 2006 Mercedes-Benz was speeding on Route 109 northbound near the intersection with Golding Avenue when she lost control of her car for an unknown reason, police said.
The Mercedes-Benz careened off a parked car, knocked down several utility poles and hit the gas pumps at an Ultra Gas station. The pumps erupted in flames, setting the car and gas station on fire, police said.
West Babylon fire department units were able to put out the fire but neither they nor police on the scene could rescue the driver.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
Her name is being withheld while police work to get a positive identification.
The crash investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to call First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152.
