Southold police charged a Greenport man with driving while intoxicated after authorities said he drove a truck into oncoming traffic in Greenport and struck another vehicle, killing a passenger.

John Costello, 71, was driving a 2008 Chevy pickup truck east on Route 25 about 6:54 p.m. Saturday when he crossed into the westbound lane, police said. He hit a 2006 Honda driven by Oseas Maneli Ramirez, 22, of Peconic, Southold police said in a news release.

Miguel Bartolone, 34, also of Peconic, a passenger in the Honda, died at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, Southold police said.

Costello was found to be intoxicated at the scene, Southold police said. He was arrested and taken in police custody by ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Greenport and Southold fire departments responded to the accident.

Ramirez was treated for minor injuries and released.
