Four people were arrested Monday inside a Port Jefferson Station home where police found heroin, crack and powdered cocaine stored next to a 2-year-old child’s bed, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said Thursday.
All of the defendants face multiple charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance. Each pleaded not guilty at arraignment in Central Islip on Wednesday.
The child is now in the care of Suffolk County Child Protective Services, authorities said.
Suffolk County District Attorney’s Heroin Task Force seized an unknown quantity of raw heroin, 100 grams of crack, 50 grams of powdered cocaine plus scales, wax packets, and other heroin packaging supplies at 171 Jayne Blvd., a two-story house across from the John F. Kennedy Middle School.
Officials say the arrests come at the end of a multi-month investigation of heroin trafficking in Brookhaven Town.
“Dealing drugs across the street from a school and the storage of these dangerous narcotics within feet of a child’s bed tell you all you need to know about these defendants’ disregard for everything other than getting and selling heroin and other drugs,” Spota said. “The shutdown of this operation is good news for the community.”
Terrill E. Simmons, 38, also was charged with criminal possession of marijuana, criminal use of drug paraphernalia, endangering the welfare of a child and tampering with physical evidence. Authorities say they found him flushing heroin down the toilet when they arrived on the scene.
Simmons is being held in lieu of $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond.
Daniel Dumas, 48, also faces two counts of criminal use of drug paraphernalia. His son, Daryl Dumas, 27, was charged with one count of criminal sale of a controlled substance in or near school grounds and two counts of criminal use of drug paraphernalia.
Daniel Dumas was jailed in lieu of $35,000 cash bail or $70,000 bond and his son is being held in lieu of $75,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond.
Moneke Alexander, 38, of East Providence in Rhode Island, also was charged with criminal possession of marijuana, two counts of criminal use of drug paraphernalia and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
She is being held in the county jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 bond.
The district attorney’s office said that the Task Force has arrested dozens of alleged dealers during the past seven years, “seizing millions of dollars’ worth of heroin and illegal firearms, and ended the operation of multiple heroin distribution networks in the New York metropolitan area.”
