Suffolk County police investigate a fatal accident that occurred about 1 a.m. Saturday on Caroline Avenue near Oakes Street in Port Jefferson. A Port Jefferson man, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene and a female passenger was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center, police said. (Feb. 11, 2012) Credit: Christopher Sabella

A 23-year-old Port Jefferson man was killed early Saturday when the car he was driving collided with wood retaining wall and overturned, Suffolk County police said.

Michael Peggs was driving a 2001 Subaru on Caroline Avenue near Oakes Street in Port Jefferson when it overturned about 1:25 a.m.

An official from the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office pronounced Peggs dead at the scene.

A 23-year-old female passenger was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center by Port Jefferson Fire Department for treatment of minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Sixth Squad at 631-854-8652.
